Starcrash...yes! You're right that B movie charm that makes is hilarious and fun and definitely wanted to be Star Wars.

Battle Beyond the Stars is not a Star Wars film so much. More of a Seven Samurai, Magnificent Seven plot although John Boy definitely was Luke. I heard Message From Space was Japan's most expensive movie ever made at that time. Battlestar Galactica is more Wagon Train and the biblical Exodus than Star Wars (yes, the space dog-fights like Star Wars which got it from real dog fighting in WWII). I think some of the sf/x and/or model makers from Industrial Light and Magic worked on Battlestar back in the day too. The Black Hole is not a Star Wars type film either.

Family Guy animated series without approval has boldly gone where many comedies have never gone before. Blue Harvest was the first of the trilogy to poke fun at many things and another favorite is Robot Chicken. having toys and actors reply certain movie lines in non serious ways pretty funny. I do wish Hamil didn't retire from the Joker character he's so good at it. If I was him I'd do that character for as long as possible with Conroy.

Oh dear. I've seen a terrifyingly large proprotion of those. Yes, they were nearly all as bad as presented here.

  • David Bland

I could easily have went on never knowing any of those movies existed except Battlestar Galactica which lead to the modern version of the series which was excellent. I'm having a hard time believing any of the others where even serious attempts at a movie.

Spacehunter does have the distinction of being the source of a classic line that I still quote today: "Emergency Repair Procedure Number One: Kick it."

Starcrash is the best bad movie ever made. Unbelievably bad on every measure.

Now no one wants to be like Star Wars. Or likes Star Wars. Or even will remember Star Wars in the next coming decades. Thanks Disney.

  • jbrisby
    jbrisby

The focus of this article was all wrong. Nobody cares about Z-movies that were made on the cheap and completely forgotten. You should have made a list of the more ambitious Star Wars knockoffs, like The Last Starfighter, Krull, and Enemy Mine.

  • jbrisby
    jbrisby

Hoping to see Krull on this list.

I've seen "Battle Beyond the Stars" (which technically was a low budget sci-fi "Seven Samuri"); how is Disney's meh and weird @The Black Hole in this list its soundtrack score being its best atribute; I have also see the infuriating "StarCrash," one of my most loathed films ever...

I've watched four of these. Battle beyond the stars, Metalstorm the destruction of Jared-Syn, Battlestar Galactica, The Black Hole. I don't know if that is good or a bad thing.

Have you ever watched Starcrash? It may have knocked off star wars a littlebit, however, it came out in 1978. Therefore, how many ideas did Lucas steal from Starcrash to put into Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi?????

The most blatant ripoff was probably The Humanoid, starring Richard Kiel. Starchaser was really blatant too.

The original 1978 Battlestar Galactica. You need to give that more of a chance.

  • Victor Fatalys

How ironic that, in the end, they are way better Star Wars than the "modern" trilogy; at least none of these movies were as disrespectful to Star Wars as Disney was 😉

I never saw Battlestar Galactica as a rip off of Star Wars. The stories are dramatically different. The enemy is dramatically different. Lasers and space ships? OMG, it must be a copy.

  • Eric Engstrom

Black Hole was better than I expected going in. I mean, it wasn't good and the plot was meh, but I had a good time watching Maximilian Schell get into his role.

Actually I don't think of Black Hole and Battlestar Galactica as being rip offs I actually liked Battlestar Galactica more than Star Wars at the time and even today Same with Battle Beyond the Stars

  • Harry Nobutee
    Harry Nobutee

Last Starfighter! Ice Pirates! ...and of course, Space Balls, but that one's obvious... (oh, and Battlestar Galactica was not a Stars Wars rip, it was a Buck Rogers rip-off)

  • Don Lekei
    Don Lekei

I know you are too young to remember but Battlestar Galactica and Buck Rogers in the 25th Century were television shows that were so expensive to produce that they were released in theatrical release in order to pay for the enormous cost of the sets, models and effects (so they could produce "stock effects" and reuse them dozens of times throughout the series). Has anyone counted the number of times the scene of a viper destroying a cylon then another viper flying through the explosion was used in BSG TOS?

  • James Mac777
    James Mac777

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy never attempted to be Star Wars, because Douglas Adams wrote it as satire of the meaning of life, as being described in his generation. By example, in his books, one popular idea is that we don't have free will among those who are avoiding their guilty actions; therefore, we don't choose anything; hence, and all casinos are natural grown gambling machines and tables with a natural grass for the carpet, where people just show up to enjoy what nature brought them; because, nobody would ever build a casino as that required free will to choose. Another example is the answer to the Life, Universe, and Everything is "42," and this is affirming the consequent fallacy, where we take a desired outcome and fill it with a proper question (this is common in socialist education found at universities): in the story, the heroes of the story seek the question to the answer of "42." Overall, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is enjoyable as satire, because we are never tested of our intelligence, because it is only populated with selfish answers that challenge nobody and told for entertainment.

Just because a movie is Sci-fi doesn't mean it ripped off Star Wars... and Star Wars wasn't all that original... Flash Gordan anyone? All the WWII movies of the 50's, 60's, and even early 70's clearly had elements that were "borrowed" to make Star Wars...

I am still a fan of old school battlestar. I had the toys and every thing. Lucas stole from Japanese movies black and White flash Gordon buck Rogers so he got a lot of balls to do that. I am not a Lucas fan . I do like Star Wars but hate the person that Lucas is 🇬🇧

Clicked this in hopes of seeing what some of these star wars clones are like. But I honestly don't know which of the fast and short clips are from the movie being discussed or filler from other movies you've inserted. Sorry, but I didn't get what I came for.

Thank you for putting in MetalStorm. I remember seeing that movie in the theater as a child with my family, and absolutely hating it. Whenever I tried to bring it up, my cousins could never remember the name of it. Thank you for finally putting a name to this pain after 30 years. And Battle Beyond the Stars was an awesome movie, for the time. I always saw it on TV, so I never knew it was actually in the theaters.

  • Simon Young

So basically, anything set in space that involves good and evil is a Star Wars RIP off. Maybe you should have looked back as far as the likes of Flash Gordon to realise that Star Wars wasn’t that original

  • pudgydog00

My two choices for this list: 1) Flash Gordon 2) Eragon (Though it wasn't in space, it was almost a scene by scene rip on Star Wars.)

This is like "Idiocracy." "Let's go see "The Movie." Why does Star Wars have to be the end all sci-fi? When Buck Rogers came out did people say, "Why? "We already have Flash Gordon." When Star Trek came out did people say, "Why? We already have Buck Rogers." When Star Wars came out did people say, "Why? We already have Star Trek." Since Star Wars arrived Sci-fi has died.

You missed Star Trek the Motion Picture (1979) where they quickly reunited an aging, out of shape cast from a decade old TV show for a quick buck on the Star Wars bandwagon.

I am surprised you did not mention GALAXINA...while not so much a knock off of Star Wars...it was still from that era. And ut does have some fun with character names.. Avery Schriber as "Captain Cornelius Butt"...but it's primary distibction is it was the last film of Dorothy Stratton...in the title role as an emotionless Android learning what it is like to feel. A fitting tribute to a true beauty...and sad that her whackjob boyfriend had to go and kill her. Still it is well worth the time to catch...and mind...don't say "The Blue Dtar" while it's playing or you get the silly Chorus music.

I remember Cattlecar -- Errr --- Battlestar Galactica Early episodes suffered from lazy scripts, but the third version was much better, with some of the cylon outpost general reporting that half their centurions were suffering from rust and encounters with space-NAZIs flying through space in spaceships that greatly resembled giant U-boats, and of course the occasional scene with veteran actor Lorne "Pa Cartwright" Green, resplendent in a uniform covered by a black velour bath robe, maintining an absolutely serious expression while utterting a line begining with "By the lords of Kobol..."

6:59 How can you consider yourself a nerd in this century without having seen the BSG remake? For as much time as this channel spends panning subpar reboots, remakes, and sequels, you really ought to binge watch one remake that wholly eclipses the original. Also, like one or two others on this list, I can’t see how even the original Battlestar “wanted to be Star Wars”. They’re set in space and both Dirk Benedict and Mark Hamill have about the same late 70’s hairstyle.

  • Chucky McNubbin
    Chucky McNubbin

Battlestar Galactica was nothing like Star Wars. Different sets, different storyline, different starship, different technologies, different everything. There was no similarity between the two at all.

  • Kathleen McCarthy
    Kathleen McCarthy

Hey, one good thing about the Black Hole was we all wanted to know what a Black Hole was-that made us want to learn a little about space. I didn’t see any of these so I don’t have a favorite.

  • Mark Clews
    Mark Clews

Battlestar Galactica didn't have a Farmboy becomes hero story, didn't have a Moon-sized Space Station, didn't have multiple weird looking races (Just one, the robotic enemy) and didn't have a magical power. Yup it must be a rip-off of Star Wars. Something similar can also be said of "The Black Hole".

  • AussieBlokeGordo

    BSG was awesome

  • logon235

If you mean that they want to hit the box office like star wars, that is every movie ever released in theatres. Star Wars did not invent space based 'sci fi' movies. It's a knock off itself. This list feels 'forced' and probably made by someone trying to meet a deadline or get sacked but somehow got a free pass.

  • Kerrain
    Kerrain

Maybe I missed the point. Most of these movies are not knock offs. At best they are Sci-Fi movies. Battle Star Galactica, look at the actual story, originally Cylons created by aliens that are intent on destroying the humans... This plot in no way resembled StarWars except oh yeah its in space. Blackhole, once again it's in space so it's a knock off? If you meant they desperately wanted to have the financial success of StarWars then I'll agree but other than that you have stretched too far and fallen well short of the mark.
